In Memoriam: Norma McKinney Meeks, Board Member

When Norma McKinney Meeks passed away suddenly on Thanksgiving evening at her home in Ashland, Kentucky, North Shore Animal League America lost a friend, a colleague, and an inspiration. As an energetic and creative member of our community since the early 1990s, Norma combined her lifelong concern for animals with her expertise as an award-winning educator to promote adoption and humane education.

Norma loved children and dogs, so it was inevitable that she became a key player in the national dissemination and implementation of our
Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum, which uses the affinity between kids and pets to teach social and emotional skills critical to academic and personal success. Thanks in part to Norma’s wealth of knowledge and ebullient personality, teachers, administrators, and students across the country embraced the Curriculum, making it the success it is today.

In 2017, after a 49-year career as a second-grade teacher in Boyd County, Kentucky, Norma joined our Board of Directors, where she continued to contribute to the growth of our no-kill mission. Her generosity and boundless energy impressed everyone who had the pleasure of working with her, both at NSALA and in her hometown, where she was active in many civic organizations, including local animal shelters.

Norma leaves a deep and compassionate legacy, along with countless people who loved her and will always miss her. We extend our deepest sympathy to her family and friends.
