Dior’s latest collection’s inspiration comes from the encounter between two countries, two cultures and two traditions – Italy and France. Maria Grazia Chiuri breathes life into the collection paying homage to Catherine de Medici, an Italian who arrived at the French court in the 1530s and remains a figure emblematic of the relationship between women and power and fashion, something that mirrors the life of these two women alike.
For Dior’s spring-summer 2023 ready-to-wear défilé, Chiuri unveiled the collection prompted by fashion from the Baroque period including a renaissance colour palette, corsets, and Burano lace – sartorial innovations that Medici was credited with during her time in court. However, Maria Grazia Chiuri gave her own contemporary updates to the corset by giving it “quasi-geometric” shapes and patterns in the collection.
In attendance for the show set at Tuileries Garden, Paris on September 27, 2022, were imminent icons like Kim Jisoo, Natalie Portman, Shailene Woodley, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rosamund Pike.
