For the previous spring collection, the Italian luxury house Gucci had foraged from the American dream, with a strong resonance to Hollywood, and a runway that was decorated with a star front row consisting the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow in the very Gucci-esque red velvet suit. Staged with Hollywood Boulevard in the backdrop in the centre of LA’s hustle and bustle, there was a delicate balance of the Gucci branding—under Alessandro Michele’s tutelage— that is an eclectic imprint, bringing together a sporty mix of aesthetics that finds its roots in the American film landscape. Creative director Alessandro Michele’s dream initially was to work in costumes, as he had iterated backstage during his previous spring collection, and so the dots connect easily with all the strange theatricality of his clothing, and the drama of staging runway shows in the manner that he has done up till now. For the new Spring/Summer 2023 offering, the designer hints at memories of familial relations and illusions in his ‘Gucci Twinsburg’—which albeit shrouded in mystery, only serves to keep us on the edge of our seats.
